Three Dog-Friendly Natural Carpet Cleaning Methods

Commercial carpet cleaning solutions give great results. However, many of these products can irritate the sinuses of humans and canines. These products can also be toxic to your dog's skin and paws. If your dog comes in contact with harmful household cleaners, he may show signs, such as itching and biting at the paws and skin, fur loss, flaking skin, and general foul mood. You likely won't know if your dog is allergic or sensitive to typical commercial carpet cleaning solutions until after you use the product and see a problem with your dog. It is best to avoid these products altogether and opt for all-natural carpet cleaning products instead.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is great for removing stains like food and drinks, and even pet urine and feces. Make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the spot on your carpet and let it set for 10-20 minutes. Use a carpet steamer or shampooer filled with pure water to go over the baking soda and pull it out of the carpet. This should remove most stains. You can also sprinkle plain baking soda, or baking soda mixed with a little bit of an essential oil on your carpet to freshen and deodorize the area.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice offers the same cleaning properties that baking soda does in most cases. Lemon juice will remove light stains and stains that haven't been ground in or left to sit for days and days. Lemon juice will not bleach carpet fibers, so it is safe to mix one part lemon juice with one part water and spray this solution across your carpet. The lemon juice and water mixture will remove unwanted smells from your carpets, so your home will smell clean and fresh at all times. Plus, this solution will dry quickly so you won't be sliding across wet carpets in the process of trying to restore order and cleanliness to your home.

Over-the-Counter Products

Not all commercially-prepared or store-bought carpet cleaning solutions should be avoided. Most pet stores now offer carpet cleaning solutions that are not only very effective but also safe and non-toxic for humans, dogs, and other pets. These solutions can be used alone or in a carpet cleaning machine, and will remove stubborn stains and foul odors from your carpet. Pet-friendly carpet cleaning solutions are generally offered at the same price point as solutions that are less pet-friendly, and these solutions are better for your pets and the environment.
